I’ve been answering the same business question for different clients since 2012: “Why is revenue moving, and where exactly is the movement coming from?” The tools I’ve used to answer it have changed three times. Excel. Then classic Power BI. Now modern Power BI with Fabric and AI assistance. Each generation, I thought the new tool had finally solved the problem. Each generation, I was partly wrong — the tools got dramatically better, but the bottleneck stayed stubbornly the same. Here’s what every generation got right, what each one got wrong, and what I now believe is actually permanent about building dashboards that matter.
