For 15 years, the Chromebook was Google’s answer to the laptop question.
Yesterday, Google replaced it entirely.
That is not hyperbole, and it is not a rebrand. On May 12, 2026, at the Android Show: I/O Edition, Google announced Googlebook, a new category of premium laptops running Android with Gemini wired into the operating system at the foundation level. The underlying platform is called Aluminium OS, a version of Android 17 rebuilt from scratch as a genuine desktop system. ChromeOS is not being updated. It is being replaced. And that is just one of roughly a dozen major announcements Google packed into a single 40-minute prerecorded stream, one week before Google I/O 2026 officially kicks off on May 19.
