AMD Confirms FSR 4.1 Support for Radeon 7000 RDNA 3 GPUs Using Integer Based Computations and early 2027 RDNA 2 Plans
AMD officially confirmed that FSR 4.1 would also come to older GPU architectures. In a official statement released by the software development team, it was confirmed that the machine learning software would be made available to users of Radeon 7000 series cards this coming July. By finding workarounds for the lack of dedicated AI acceleration hardware, the engineers have been able to successfully implement the upscaling algorithm across the huge ecosystem of devices which has led to the development and deployment of the hardware for over 1,000,000,000 devices worldwide.
The main technical constraint in implementing the machine learning software on RDNA 3 has been the actual physical limitations of the architecture. Newer RDNA 4 silicon is manufactured with integrated FP8 acceleration, which is designed to accommodate a wide variety of floating point formats for maximum range during machine learning workloads. Due to the absence of dedicated FP8 hardware units on the Radeon 7000 cards the engineers had to rework the machine learning algorithm in order to allow it to run using integer based computations while remaining visually equivalent to that of its younger, more advanced counterpart.
Adapting the machine learning model for use on RDNA 3 has been an exercise in tight internal memory management and robust validation of the motion vectors that prevent visual artifacts when playing fast moving gameplay. Ensuring performance has always remained the most important element during the development of this feature, with engineers optimizing the code to run within extremely low milliseconds time frames to ensure that no negative latency is induced by the scaling process itself that would counteract the benefit derived from its use.
To confirm the stability and efficacy of this machine learning based software adjustment AMD tested it across over 100 separate hardware configurations of the PC. At the time of the RDNA 3 release it will be immediately compatible with well over 300 video games out of the box, instantly upgrading the visual output of gamers without requiring independent software updates from game developers.
