KAZAN, Russia (MNTV) — Algeria has expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Russia in artificial intelligence through joint startup financing, university research partnerships and the development of AI companies serving African and European markets.
Algerian Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-Enterprises Noureddine Ouadah discussed the proposal during the International Economic Forum “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum,” according to African Initiative.
Ouadah said artificial intelligence has become a strategic and highly competitive sector globally and argued that collaboration between Algerian and Russian institutions could help build strong AI-focused companies.
“The world has been living through a boom of artificial intelligence, which is a sensitive and strategic technology,” Ouadah said, adding that cooperation with Russian universities and technology firms could strengthen innovation and research capabilities.
He proposed expanding collaboration through joint research and development projects, along with mutual funding mechanisms linking Algerian and Russian universities and startups.
According to the minister, the partnership could help Algeria access technologies positioned for both African and European markets while encouraging the growth of new AI ventures.
Ouadah also described the discussions as part of a longer historical relationship between the two countries, noting that Soviet academics and researchers contributed to Algeria’s scientific and technological development during the 1960s and 1970s.
The KazanForum, taking place from May 12 to 17, has brought together delegations from more than 90 countries, including several African states, for discussions on trade, technology and economic cooperation.
The AI discussions follow earlier Algeria-Russia engagement in the energy sector. In March, Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin and Algeria’s ambassador to Russia, Toufik Djouama, discussed cooperation on sectoral standards and new energy technologies.
