A research project at Punjabi University has led to the development of an innovative technology aimed at helping visually impaired individuals to navigate safely and independently inside homes, offices and public buildings.
The research was carried out by Dr Sumandeep Kaur, a research scholar from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, under the supervision of Dr Lakhwinder Kaur and co-supervision of Dr Madan Lal. The findings of the research have been published in high-impact SCI-indexed international journals.
According to Dr Sumandeep Kaur, the research focuses on developing a real-time obstacle-detection system capable of instantly identifying and analysing obstacles in a user’s path. The system continuously scans the surrounding environment to detect both stationary and moving objects.
She said the developed technology had immense potential for integration into wearable devices, smart navigation systems and AI-driven healthcare solutions. The deployment on mobile and embedded platforms could help provide affordable and efficient assistive solutions for the visually impaired.
The technology makes use of advanced image processing, segmentation techniques and deep learning models. Dr Madan Lal said one of the major features of the technology was its ability to provide real-time auditory feedback in the form of voice-based alerts. Vice-Chancellor Dr Jagdeep Singh lauded the research.
