Berget AI launches Berget Code in Sweden, ensuring data sovereignty for European developers amid rising reliance on U.S. AI infrastructure.
Berget AI has launched Berget Code, a new coding service designed to address the growing concern of data sovereignty among European developers. Hosted entirely in Sweden, Berget Code is built on open-source software and models, providing a sovereign alternative to U.S.-based AI tools, which many European companies have come to rely on.
Data Sovereignty and Compliance
Amid the increasing adoption of AI coding assistants like Claude Code and Codex, organizations handling sensitive data face critical challenges. Berget Code offers a solution by ensuring that all processed data remains within Sweden, is fully GDPR-compliant, and is not subject to U.S. CLOUD Act regulations. According to CTO Christian Landgren, "Developers want to use AI—but they also need to know where their code is going and who can access it."
Open Models and Technological Advancements
The launch of Berget Code capitalizes on advancements in open-source language models, which have reached parity with proprietary tools by early 2026. Berget Code integrates state-of-the-art models such as Kimi K2.6 from Moonshot AI, Gemma 4 from
Google, and Mistral Medium 3.5 from Mistral AI. This enables the system to handle advanced tasks like refactoring and architecture planning with a 256,000-token context window.
Integration and Market Dynamics
Berget Code is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing developer workflows, being compatible with environments like OpenCode and Pi, and
OpenAI API-compatible. This ensures a smooth transition for teams moving away from American providers without losing productivity.
Strategic Timing and European AI Infrastructure
European companies are increasingly facing the dilemma of choosing between cutting-edge AI tools hosted abroad or maintaining strict control over their data. As pricing and access to U.S.-based tools become more restrictive and sustainability concerns grow, Berget AI believes sovereignty will become a competitive advantage. Founded in 2024, Berget AI aims to build independent AI infrastructure for Europe, serving entities like government agencies and financial institutions. By offering
OpenAI-compatible APIs and sovereign hosting, the company seeks to be a key player in the European AI landscape.
