TOKYO -- A daughter of Yomiuri Giants pro baseball team manager Shinnosuke Abe consulted ChatGPT before reporting his alleged assault on her to a child consultation center, it has been learned.
Abe, 47, was arrested on May 25 on suspicion of assaulting his 18-year-old daughter, and was later released. The Yomiuri Giants announced his resignation the following day.
According to sources close to the investigation, Abe's eldest daughter reported the alleged assault to the child guidance center after receiving advice from the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT. There had been no previous consultations involving the daughter, and it is thought that her own report to the center led to the police action.
After being subjected to violence by her father, the third-year high school student asked ChatGPT, "I suffered violence from my dad. What should I do?" The chatbot apparently suggested she report the incident to a child consultation center, which prompted her to do so. The center then called police at around 7:15 p.m. on May 25, reporting, "A daughter was assaulted by her father."
Abe is suspected of grabbing his daughter by the collar with his hands and shoving her to the floor at their home in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward at around 7 p.m. on May 25. He was arrested on suspicion of assault. He admitted to the allegations and was released shortly past midnight.
Abe initially tried to break up a fight between the 18-year-old and her 15-year-old sister, but apparently got upset about his eldest daughter's attitude. He reportedly told police, "I lost my temper as she talked back to me." He has apparently expressed remorse.
The Metropolitan Police Department plans to continue its investigation into the case on a voluntary basis.
