JACKSON, Tenn. (WBBJ) - As artificial intelligence reshapes the job market, trade schools are seeing surprising increases in hands-on careers.
Research suggests over the next three years, artificial intelligence could shift how millions of people work, changing jobs, and in some cases, replacing them.
While people worry over the future of their position, AI is doing something surprising, creating opportunity in an unexpected place.

“AI is just another tool that we feel that’s on the horizon. Right now, we’re trying to educate our students and our faculty,” said Dr. Rainey, President of TCAT Jackson.
The AI boom is building a new demand for skilled hands. At TCAT Jackson, instructors teach students how to use technology to their advantage.
“It takes the information from the program and it actually generates a toolkit,” said Rainey
Rainey says they are piloting an AI tool in several programs.
“It’s a tutoring and it helps them to understand the materials better,” said Rainey.
While some workers fear AI, trade schools say its sending more students their way.
“We actually have seen an increase in our enrollment this summer as we implement new programs,” said Rainey.

Research suggests this demand distinguishes AI proof work where artificial intelligence is a tool that enhances rather than replaces the core job.
“It’s not only just the skill part which is that hands-on part, but we also have theory so programs are going to have a certain percentage of the book work, the understanding of the competencies behind the skill,” said Rainey.
AI proof work utilizes strategic decision-making, complex problem-solving, empathy, negotiation, and creative thinking.
“Our job is to create a pipeline of workers who can go to work in these manufacturing industries or other organizations,” said Rainey.
Manufacturing remains the top growing industry in Southwest Tennessee.
