SAN FRANCISCO—Anthropic said it is launching an upgraded version of its Claude Opus model while continuing preparations to make its closely watched Mythos artificial intelligence model broadly available in the coming weeks, according to Reuters.
As CUToday.info has previously reported, Mythos has drawn significant attention across the technology and cybersecurity sectors because of its advanced cyber capabilities, which Anthropic has acknowledged could create new risks if deployed without appropriate safeguards. Reuters reported that the model's capabilities have generated concern among some executives and government officials over its potential impact, even as Anthropic and industry partners argue it could play a major role in strengthening cyber defenses.
According to Reuters, Mythos is currently being used under Anthropic's Project Glasswing initiative, which permits select organizations, including Amazon, Microsoft and Apple, to use the model for cybersecurity-related purposes. Anthropic has said the program is designed to help identify vulnerabilities and improve digital security while maintaining oversight of the technology's deployment.
In the meantime, Reuters reported Anthropic is releasing Claude Opus 4.8, an upgraded version of its flagship model that will be offered at the same price as its predecessor. The company said the new model shows improvements across multiple performance benchmarks, particularly in honesty and transparency.
"A general problem with AI models is that they sometimes jump to conclusions, confidently claiming to have made progress in their work despite the evidence being thin," Anthropic said, according to Reuters. The company added that early testers found Opus 4.8 was more likely to acknowledge uncertainty and less likely to make unsupported claims.
The announcement comes as competition among leading AI developers continues to intensify, with firms increasingly focusing not only on model performance but also on reliability, transparency and safety. As CUToday.info previously reported, Anthropic has positioned Mythos as a next-generation model with capabilities that could reshape cybersecurity operations, while simultaneously requiring heightened scrutiny from regulators, businesses and policymakers.
